Creating in Uncertain Times: What Are We Doing?
Share
See that smile? Dude....it's hiding a lot of anxiety about 'BREAKING NEWS!" (these last weeks have been a loooooooong year lol...) Lately, I’ve been looking around at other artists and seeing the same struggle I feel—this push to create when everything around us feels so uncertain. What are we doing? Does it even matter? Some days, making art feels futile, like I should be doing something more practical, more urgent. And yet, I keep going.
It’s hard not to question the value of creating when the world feels chaotic. People are struggling, and the idea of spending time on a painting or a sketch can feel selfish, almost disconnected. But maybe that’s exactly why we need to keep making things. Maybe art isn’t just about beauty or expression but about holding onto something human when everything else feels like it’s slipping away.
I don’t have a clear answer. I just know that every time I consider walking away, something pulls me back. A moment of connection, a reminder that someone needed to see something I made, even if I didn’t know it at the time. Maybe creating isn’t about solving anything. Maybe it’s about making space for something real, something that reminds us why we’re still here, still trying.
So, what are we doing? We’re making. We’re surviving. We’re putting pieces of ourselves into the world, even when it feels impossible. And maybe, just maybe, that’s enough.
